Vendor Spotlight: Down Home Comfort Bakery
Walk into Down Home Comfort Bakery on East Main Street and the first thing that hits you is the smell, cinnamon rolls with homemade brown sugar, fresh pies topped by hand, bread made with stone-ground flour. The second thing is Keith. Ask him about the historical photos lining the walls and be ready to stay a while. He's a well of local history, and he loves nothing more than sharing it with anyone who walks through the door.
Keith Menefee is a sixth-generation Front Royal resident, and one story he tells often is Bing Crosby Day. On April 1, 1950, the Hollywood superstar rolled into town and more than 25,000 people showed up to see him. Crosby wasn't just there for a parade, he came to raise funds for a first-class baseball stadium for Front Royal's youth, and the town's stadium stands today because of it. The bakery's walls carry photos and artifacts from that day, and Keith works closely with the Warren Heritage Society, whose Laura Virginia Hale Archives keeps a large collection of Bing Crosby Day memorabilia for the whole town to enjoy.
Keith and Maureen own the bakery together, and Maureen is the one behind the ovens. Opening a bakery of her own had been a lifelong dream, one she carried for years before a life-changing moment pushed her to finally take the leap. Almost a decade later, she's still creating, still testing new ideas on her employees, and still proof that it's never too late to build the thing you always wanted.
Everything is made from scratch in small batches, never mass produced, and it's all free of artificial ingredients and preservatives. The cinnamon rolls come topped with house-made cream cheese frosting or as pecan sticky buns. The pies are hand-topped and made from dough up. Breads, cakes, whoopie pies, cookies, all baked the same way: real ingredients, real care. Local honey and jelly sit near the register for anyone who wants to take a taste of Front Royal home with them.
For an offsite meeting or retreat, Down Home Comfort Bakery is the kind of stop that turns a coffee break into a memory, and a to-go box of cinnamon rolls into the thing everyone talks about on the drive home.
