Mark Harris grew up in Wales, United Kingdom, where his parents ran an outdoor pursuits center, giving inner-city children a week at a time in the natural world. They eventually moved here, and when the opportunity came to take over the legendary Downriver Canoe Company, it felt less like a business decision and more like the next natural step in a life lived outdoors.
When Mark invited the Headwaters team out to Bentonville, we drove out on a beautiful day and immediately understood what fifty years of reputation feels like in person. The property is extraordinary. A covered porch that comfortably seats fifty people overlooks the river, ready for meetings, meals, or simply a moment to breathe in what surrounds you. A separate campground, with both upper and lower sections accommodating up to 250 people, sits at the river's edge where adventurers disembark after a day on the water. Picnic tables, potable water, and the kind of stillness that only comes from being truly away from it all. The campground backs to Shenandoah National Park, and the trails from that spot lead deeper into the kind of wilderness that reminds you why you came.
Downriver Canoe Company offers canoe trips, kayak rentals, raft trips, tube floats, river camping adventures, personal boat shuttle service, and now bike rentals as part of an exciting expansion that is turning Downriver into a complete outdoor adventure destination. No reservations required for most trips. Open April through October. Minimum age five. Located at 884 Indian Hollow Road in Bentonville, just about an hour from Washington D.C.
One thing worth knowing: Downriver is intentionally off the grid. There is no AV equipment on site and wifi is limited. That is not a limitation. For groups that want to be fully present, screens down and senses wide open, it is exactly the point. The river has a way of doing what no conference room ever could.
