Vendor Spotlight: Phoenix Project
Every spotlight so far has been about food, art, or adventure. This one is different. It's about the steady, quiet work of the Phoenix Project's team, and why Headwaters is proud to call them a partner.
The Phoenix Project traces back to 2014, when Front Royal's United Way stepped in after a local domestic violence agency closed its doors. The community's response became the Phoenix Project's first grant, ever awarded by that United Way chapter, and a donated office where a 24/7 crisis hotline went live almost immediately. The name comes from the mythological bird that rises from its own ashes, a fitting symbol for an agency built around second chances.
Today Avery Harper serves as Executive Director, stepping into the role after long-time director Tammy Sharpe's retirement following years spent growing the agency from two former counselors into a fully accredited Domestic Violence Agency, one of the first in Virginia to earn that distinction. What began as hotline support has expanded into court accompaniment, housing assistance, children's counseling, and a dedicated sexual assault program, all free and confidential to Warren County, VA residents.
Headwaters' connection to the Phoenix Project runs deeper than admiration from a distance. Darcy and her co-founder, Ace, both volunteer with the organization, and attended a Phoenix Project volunteer appreciation luncheon together, held upstairs at Brick House Bar & Grill, alongside a room full of neighbors who show up without being asked twice. Darcy has also represented the Phoenix Project at their booth at two Front Royal festivals.
